Should I look for a new doctor?

A good doctor can be your healthcare confidante. Conversely, a bad doctor can get in the way of your health and well-being, and may even directly contribute to the development of medical issues and illnesses with his or her care, or lack thereof. In this case, it’s important to know the signs that it’s time to look for a new doctor, as explained by Self

Sometimes patients know better than their doctors about certain subjects. For instance, a serious symptom you’re experiencing might be written off as stress or nerves by your doctor. While your doctor has a medical education, you’re also most familiar with your body, and as a result, you likely know when something’s amiss. In this case, don’t be afraid to press your doctor about symptoms that can’t be easily explained away. In the same token, feel free to seek a second opinion if you continue to receive the same medical advice.

Also, be wary of doctors who immediately write a new prescription when you complain of medical issues. While medication is certainly helpful, conservative care might be a better option for our issue. Additionally, your doctor should also review your drug and medication history before prescribing a new drug. This is the best way to prevent harmful interactions from occurring, which can cause serious complications.

Finally, your doctor should be willing to entertain questions from you during appointments. Satisfactorily answering patient questions is a must to increase your understanding of your medical condition and general health. It also allows you to take a proactive role in your own health, which is integral to properly identify side effects and other issues. While your doctor may be busy, your health is also important and should be taken seriously.
