The Amtrak derailment near Tacoma, Washington, on December 18, 2017, was a devastating accident. The train was traveling from Seattle to Portland when it careened off its track over a stretch of Interstate 5.

The train was traveling at a speed of 80 mph on a 30 mph stretch of track. Investigators are saying it is too early to know why the train was traveling so fast.

Of the 12 cars, only one remained on the track after the derailment. Three people were killed and 72 people were taken to the hospital. In addition to those injured on the train, five cars and two trucks were involved in a pileup. No motorists were killed.

As the investigation continues, more details will emerge about the cause of the accident.
